Have you noticed the interesting phenomenon that happens around this time of year? It’s not just Star Wars. We are bombarded with advertisements on TV, pop-ups online, mailings, billboards, and in printed materials all seeking to helping us make life changing resolutions for this New Year! These appeals range from losing weight to sharpening our minds to building better relationships to finding the right match to increasing our knowledge to experiencing peace or love or success or our dreams. We tend to at least consider these pleas, as most of us really do want to improve in some way.
New Year is a great time to refresh, restart, reignite, and rethink our life, contemplating what key actions will enhance the life God gave us. So sure we all could use some help and guidance, yet some of what is posted and advertised is a bit strange. I was at the gym this past week and as I was sweating it out in the elliptical machine I was drawn to an infomercial endorsing some ointment and special girdle-type garment that when applied and worn for, ‘just a few minutes each day’ and voila!, inches fall off your belly. I wish it was that easy! Another post says having a brisk cold shower each day is the answer to being successful?!? It seem much of these suggestion are more like the elixirs and snake-oils charlatans would sell back in frontier times. So, what are some helpful actions from a reliable source?
The Bible is packed full of steadfast truths we can rely on. One such truth and a great worthwhile resolution is to know Jesus better.
2 Peter 1:3 His (Jesus’) divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence
Through knowing Jesus, life has order and aligns.
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
The Kingdom of God is Jesus on the throne of life meaning we yield to His will and way. It’s a life surrendered to the leadership and love of Jesus, making Him our highest affection. When we do this, life aligns. Because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life as John 14:6 says.
Through knowing Jesus, we are helped and encouraged.
Matthew 11:28-30 28 Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
Jesus will help us as we deal with the difficulties of life. He may not take them away, but He will walk with us as we endure. His ‘yoke’ meaning ‘way of life’ is what we were created for. We were created to live in relationship with Jesus. So yes, it’s a worthwhile resolution to know Jesus better.
Colossians 1:15-17 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Jesus does hold things together in world that constantly want to pull things, and us apart. One child in seeking to describe Jesus said He is like Scotch Tape, you can’t see Him but He holds things together. Jesus brings peace, hope, joy, and love. Not only all this but Jesus saves us from the deadly effect of sin.
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Propitiation is the atoning sacrifice Jesus made, dying on a cross so we might be justified before God. Justified meaning the removing of guilt and penalty of sin while at the same time declaring us righteous through what Jesus did on the cross. Yes, Jesus did that for us! How amazing and comforting and wonderful is that?!?
So what are your New Year’s resolutions? I know have made a few to get healthier and accomplish a few tasks, but my greatest determination this year and for the rest of my life is to know Jesus better. Will you join me? Jesus is a worthwhile resolution.
