Trust Matters

As a kid we lived in Alaska for a time, right near the middle of the state in Fairbanks. My dad taught at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and we lived in facility housing on campus. Alaska is a great place for any boy to grow up. The outdoor life is amazing, a bit harsh and little interesting. One time I was chased by a moose on my way to swim practice (yes it was an indoor pool). Now, the winters were especially noteworthy because they were extreme and if you were not prepared or cautious it could be very harmful and even dangerous. I did get frostbite one winter helping out at a dogsled race and another winter it got as cold as 70 below zero!

One lesson I did learn up in this great winter wonderland was when crossing a frozen lake, pond or river I needed to make sure the ice was trustworthy. I learned what to notice and how to proceed with caution and avoid areas that were potential dangers. I learned not fear the frozen water, but respect it, while enjoying the fun you can have sliding around, playing hockey, and ice skating. Trust was a key.

In life, trust is also a key, for what we place our trust in matters. If we place our trust in the thin ice of an unreliable investor we may find our finances in trouble. If we place our trust in the good reputation of a proven product, we enjoy the benefits of that trust. If we place out trust in a connection with person of integrity and proven character, we gain the joys of that relationship. You see, what we trust in matters.

The Bible teaches that it is good to trust in God and His way of life.
Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.
That’s an amazing promise because trust in God gives direction to life. Jesus said a very similar thing.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
To seek first God’s kingdom is to trust in His leadership. When this trust in extended, life aligns. That is the subject Jesus was addressing with His Disciples in Matthew 6. The Disciples were concerned, worried about life and where to place their trust. Jesus said trust in God’s way of life. Too much we place more trust than we should in ourselves as we seek to find meaning and purpose in life.
Proverbs 28:26 Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

To fear God is to trust in Him through all the ups and downs of life.
Psalm 9:9-10 9 The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. 10 And those who know Your name put their trust in You, for You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.

This means we extend courageous trust to know Him and live life His way.
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

So seek Him, read the Bible, explore who God is and understand His way of life. God can be trusted. He is that tried and true, thick ice to enjoy. Sure life God’s way is a bit scary, but that’s when we lean into Him, trusting in Him.
Isaiah 40:28-31 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

One of the great places to learn more of God is at church. If you are not already attending a church we would like to invite you to attend one of our church campuses this Sunday. Our website has all the information you would need . We would love for you to join us.

Seeking to trust God more with you,
