Now I am no culinary expert or baking master, yes good on the grill, but I do like to try my hand at unique recipes and create delectable dishes and desserts…well, mostly desserts. On one occasion I was baking up a storm. Yes, it looked like a storm in the kitchen with most every cabinet open, every pot and bowl strewn over the counter and a few on the floor, flower and sugar dusted here and there, a bit, well a lot, of batter on the wall and even the ceiling (oh, one hint, when using a mixer, make sure it is fully off when you take it out of whatever you are mixing!!) and me wide-eyed like a mad scientist checking the recipe and adding special and unique ingredients to get the right taste. So as I was in this tempest of cooking creation, I finished the mixing and adding, poured it into a well-greased pan and slid it into the oven. Soon those wonderful aromas would fill the room and I would be snacking on this gastronomic masterpiece.
The timer rang and as I opened the oven, something was not right, things did not rise as they should have and that wonderful smell was not as prevalent. I put it in for a few more minutes thinking maybe my unique add-ins has extended the baking time, but that did not work and now things were smelling burnt. I sat bewildered and went over the recipe and ingredients…and there it was…some of you already know what I forgot…yes it was the eggs!! It occurred to me that eggs were a key ingredient, not the special unique ones I took so much thought and effort to add.
As I thought of the importance of key ingredients in cooking, it reminded me of what we seek to add to life to make it something special, enjoyable, or just be what it’s supposed to be. We try all the time to add key relationships, key achievements, key successes, key experiences, key profiles and posts on social media, and key possessions to mix in and create the life we desire.
This search of the key ingredient is exactly what one man did so many years ago. He actually wrote a book about his journey and it is available for us to read. The book is the Bible book of Ecclesiastes written by King Solomon, the wisest man that will every live besides Jesus. In this book he describes how he tried to find meaning and purpose in life through buildings, wine, gardens, expanding his business, fulfilling his every pleasure, and amassing wealth and social power (read Ecclesiastes 2:3-11) yet in adding these ingredients to his life he still called it a waste of time, vanity, like chasing after the wind! He did come to a conclusion as he wrote and sums it up like this:
Ecclesiastes 12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
To fear God is to have reverent respect for Him and embrace Him as that key ingredient in life. Jesus put it this way…
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
To seek first the kingdom of God is to bring Jesus into your life (that is what it means to believe), placing Him and His way of life central. For when Christ is central, everything in life falls into place (that’s the meaning of ‘all these things will be added to you’) and now we live with meaning and purpose, and become that ‘something special’ we were created to be! In addition our needs are met.
Philippians 4:19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
And our enough is found in The Lord.
2 Corinthians 3:5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,
See it’s not the other unique ingredients that make life happen…its Jesus, just Jesus.
How do we then mix in and keep mixing in the key ingredient of Jesus into our lives? Get to know Jesus as you read the Bible and attend church. Mix in that knowledge by practicing the things you are learning and find a place where you can actively serve God’s purposes.
I know for me and many others, we have tried, like Solomon to find meaning and purpose in life by throwing in every ingredient imaginable, yet it’s Jesus who is that key ingredient. Why not try or keep placing Jesus in that central part of life and see what happens. It will make all the difference in the world.
Church is a great place to learn about Jesus and how to live out His way of life. If you are not already attending a church we would like to invite you to attend one of our church campuses this Sunday. Our website has all the information you would need www.cypresschurch.net . We would love for you to join us.
