A ‘Worth-It’ Journey

There are a lot of journeys in life that are worthwhile and valuable; eating healthy, exercising, developing good character, building relationships, learning, trying new things, exploring and more. These expeditions tend to bring out our best and bring a fullness of life that we were created for. Most of these excursions take something of us and many of them are downright difficult. However when we see the effects of the journey; losing that weight, playing that guitar well, communicating in that other language, the journey is worthwhile and we are glad, thankful, and even joyful of the whole process.

Well, there is a worth-it journey that has life changing and life altering outcomes. It is a journey that is open and available to anyone regardless of age, talent, or background. It does cost some time, energy, and effort, but is obtainable by anyone who would so desire it. Now this journey it is not automatic, it is a choice to venture along this trail or not.

The worth-it journey I am talking about is described in this Bible verse:
2 Peter 1:3 His (God’s) divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence

The worth-it journey is the inexhaustible journey of knowing God.
Psalm 145:3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.
‘Unsearchable,’ meaning we can never exhaust all that there is to know God. It is a limitless venture with amazing blessing, benefits, and consequences along the way.

As we know God more we see how amazing and loving and kind and great He is and our trust in Him grows.

Proverbs 3:5-7 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

To fear God is that reverent respect that comes as we know Him. When we learn of His power, of His grace, of His mercy, of His holiness we are in awe…and I don’t know about you, but I am amazed that He would want me to part of His team, His family. I remember what it was like to be last picked for kickball. The conversation went something like this, “No you take McKay, I took him last time.” The other guys would say, “No you take him and I will give you first up.” Not all that affirming as I was last kid up against the backstop waiting to be wanted. But to think God picks us! WOW.

Isaiah 41:9-10 9 you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”; 10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

To God, you are precious, valuable, and worth it! Worth so much He would send His Son to make a way for us to be connected to God (see John 3:16, 1 John 4:9-10). That’s amazing knowledge to have. Knowing how much God loves us will build our self-esteem, help us be bold, courageous and willing to take those needed risks to grow and enjoy life.

See, there is much gained from this very worth-it journey of knowing the vastness of God. Someone once said, “Small view of God, big problems. Big view of God, confidence with life’s problems.” Confidence because God is bigger…but if we don’t know that, God remains in the box of our limited understanding. There is not a box big enough for God, remember He is ‘unsearchable,’ not that you can’t search for Him…
Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek Me (God) and find Me. When you seek Me with all your heart,

But that in that searching there will always be more to learn…and gain as we grow in knowing God more. Will you? I know I want to be a forever learner of God, will you join me?

Seeking that worth-it journey of knowing God with you,

PS This Sunday August 23, 2015 we will be talking much about that character of God as we look at prayers of praise. We are continuing our Sunday teaching series, “Wrestling with God in Prayer – Those intense internal interactions with God’s Holy Spirit about life” and we would love for you to join us or listen on line sometime.
