Yes, true, it is a major pain to forget things; where you last placed your keys, your PIN number or password, how to get to that great restaurant, an anniversary, a birthday, a project at work, your day to bring the snacks, your homework, meds, to call your mom, to take out the trash, to set your alarm. We all have bits of memory laps and though most of those are not too tragic and people tend to offer a whole lot of grace, there is a deeply harmful, life-altering reality of forgetfulness. The forgetfulness I am talking about has little to do with the list above and though it seems slight, it has great influence.
The memory lapse I am talking about is our identity; who we are, what we were created for, and the great value we have as people. See God created us in His image Genesis 1:26-27 where we are fearfully and wonderfully made Psalm 139:13-14 so we are not a mistake or an accident. We are a loved individual who is precious to God.
Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.
God is crazy about you! No really! His love for you is so great He took it upon Himself to provide a way for you and all of us be saved from the devastation of sin. Sin being what we are all born with Romans 3:23 that has put a distance between us and God Isaiah 59:2. Yet through faith (a trust) we can accept (believe) Jesus’ death on the cross as our rescue and get on with the life we were created to live. A life now as part of God’s family.
Ephesians 1:3-5 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will,
And as part of God’s family we are to remember…
1 Peter 2:9-10 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Wow…let that reality soak in and feel the joy of being reminded you are not some insignificant, unimportant, irrelevant person, you are a child of Almighty God!! How great is that?!?
Yet it seems much of life seeks to enchant us into forgetfulness, shoving us down, robbing our joy and draining the delight and treasure of who we really are. In that deflated, joyless, hopeless, purposeless state of mind we tend to make bad choices, let the negative current of life flow us from one heartbreak to the next, even though our true identity is still there, we just forgot.
There is a great joy in remembering who we really are. Now sure, hardships will still happen, life will be tough, yet when we remember who we are, we experience the hope, comfort, peace, and love all associated with our identity.
Know who you are, know your identity in Jesus and experience the joy of that memory.
Seeking to be reminded with you about our true identity,
