I’m sure this has happened to you, you wake up in the middle of the night and groping in the dark you try to find your way and inadvertently run into something. This happened to me just a few nights ago. I woke up on one of those dark, dark nights with very little moon and thinking I was walking through the door, yep you guessed it, I walked right into the door. Maybe your ‘darkness’ experience was walking into an unlit room, arms out, feeling the walls, hoping for that light switch, hoping you don’t run into some thing or someone! Ever had one of those experiences? I know at those times I wish I could either seen in dark as I do in the light or had some night-vision goggles.
Well, maybe your ‘darkness’ experience in not a physical one. Like the darkness of dealing with cancer, relational issues, marriage issues, a difficult work environment, a big mess you are in (either from your own doing or it just happened), financial issues, life just seems to be way too stressful, family issues, a death, a sin, depression, and there you, are groping in the darkness seeking direction, seeking help, wishing for light, some comfort. I know when I have found myself in those ‘darkness’ experiences there is a truth of God that has brought me great encouragement:
Psalm 139:11-12 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to You; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with You.
This is talking of God. What we can’t see because of darkness, God can. Darkness is as light to Him, as bright as day! He sees, He knows. The solace from this truth is we are not alone.
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
We may not always sense His presence, but He is there! We are to trust in this reality of Him.
Proverbs 3:5-7 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
God has night vision! He sees in the darkness of life….
Daniel 2:22 He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.
That light is the Light of Life…
John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
When the darkness of life has encompassed us we are trust that God is with us, be strengthened and walk courageous knowing, The Lord will lead us through. God has night vision, grab on to Him…and the night will not seem as dark.
Trusting in the night vision of God with you,
PS This trust is part of the wrestling with God in prayer we have been talking about on in our teaching series this summer, “Wrestling with God in Prayer: Intense Internal Interactions with God’s Holy Spirit about Life.” This Sunday I will be talking about prayers of remembrance, remembering how God was with us even the dark days of life.
