Yes, knowing Jesus matters. But I am not talking about a brain-knowledge of the facts of Jesus, but the heart-knowledge of experiencing Him in life. Some think that faith is simply knowing about God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit, along with reading the Bible and going to church a few times, but faith is a relationship with Jesus built on both information and experience.
2 Peter 1:2-3 2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence
Everything we need for life and living life God’s way (godliness) is found in knowing Jesus! Yes, learn about Jesus by reading the Bible, the whole book is about Him and as we read we should be asking what do these Bible verses say about Him. Then put that knowledge in to practice, here are two ways:
Obedience. Do what God says we are to do.
1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
Yes, it is honorable to sacrifice for God, but obedience is better. The wisest man, other than Jesus, said this:
Ecclesiastes 12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
We are to reverently respect God and obey His directives. On one occasion Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was to follow. He said this…
Matthew 22:37-39 37 And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus also gave a new commandment…
John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
We are to love God, love neighbors, and love each other. As we take on these actions we are knowing Jesus and actually loving Him. Jesus said…
John 14:15 If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Trust. Belief, hope, confidence, and conviction are all part of trusting that Jesus and His way of life is better than what others or even ourselves think is the right way to live. It is a conscious choice to choose Jesus’ path of life, for our natural bent is to go our own way or the way of some other charismatic leader.
Proverbs 3:5-7 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
As we step out in a life trusting Jesus, following Him, doing what He says to do, we are experiencing life with Him, knowing Him. In knowing Him we become the people God created us to be. Knowing Jesus matters!
This coming Easter week there will be many opportunities to know Jesus. Take time and make time, make time to read your Bibles and go to church, go to as many Easter week services you can attend, let the reality of who Jesus is soak in and let that knowledge matter as you live!
