Have you ever been in awe? You know that sense where you are struck with amazement, wonder, and reverence. Maybe it’s when you look up at the night sky and see the moon and the stars and your mind goes to the vastness of the universe…and maybe this Bible verse pops into your mind…
Psalm 19:1-2 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Or maybe it’s the beauty of the budding flowers. Just this past week we brought home some daffodils and as they opened up the brilliance of their color, the unique ‘tea cup’ shape set my mind on how creative, intricate, detailed…and amazing God is…I was in awe, awe of God.
We are awed by the vast array of colors in a sunset set, the power of the waves on the beach, the newness of a day’s sunrise, and grandeur of majestic mountains. In all these there is an awe, a reverence, a great respect of God.
Romans 1:20 For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Yes, true we are without excuse to acknowledge God’s splendor because it is all around us. We see His magnificence in the strange beauty of an orchid (by the way, have you ever seen some of the varieties of shapes of orchids? Look it up sometime. My favorites are the ones that look like monkey faces). We see His glory the power of a storm or the intensity of the sun. The world is full of awesome experiences; the birth of a child, the vastness of the desert, the leap of a dolphin, the flight of a humming bird, the laugh of an infant, and I could go on and on. Each of these bring us to a reverent respect or fear of the Lord.
Awe is a choice to let our mind and heart be taken by taken by the mystery of God and revel or bask in His glory; His power, His strength, His majesty, His beauty, His sovereignty, and His love.
Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
Psalm 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
Psalm 145:3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.
Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
The Bible book of Proverbs has some interesting things to say about our awe, our reverent respect or fear of the Lord:
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
This is an amazing truth in awe! We gain wisdom and knowledge as we choose to fear God, as we choose to give Him that reverent respect. The question is will you? Will you make the time and take the time to be in awe of God. To take that moment and notice the beauty around you and choose to think of our awesome God. You will be wiser and more knowledgeable for it. Why not give it a try today?!?
