Winsome…adjective \ˈwin(t)-səm\ : cheerful, pleasant, playful, engaging, appealing, delightful, elegant, lovable, nice, charming, and kind. Wow, that’s a lot packed into one word. Yet, it is a great word and a wonderful word to describe the kind of person you would love to have as friend or you would love to be. It’s a word I would use to describe Jesus…sure He was intense, even stern at times and serious, but Jesus had a winsome character that was attractive and delightful to be around.
Matthew 9:36 When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.
Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
Philippians 2:8 And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Jesus was winsome…well really Jesus ‘is’ winsome (because, remember Jesus rose from the dead! And He is alive!!). Now being we are to be followers of Jesus, people who live and love like Jesus, we ought to bring out and put on a more winsome spirit.
To be winsome in our words and conversations:
Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
To be winsome as we love:
1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
To be winsome as we care:
Matthew 22:39… You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
To be winsome in our humility:
Philippians 2:3-4 3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
To be winsome in fostering peace:
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
To be winsome in our actions:
Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
I wonder how different our world would be if we would bring out and put on the winsomeness of Jesus? Sometimes I think our world sees more anger, careless speech, self-focus, pride, contention, conflict, and even hate from us Christ-Followers, not the winsomeness of Jesus who expresses love, joy, peace, care, kindness, and compassion. I know I sure want to reflect, bring out, and put on the winsome of Jesus…maybe you do to. Give it a try and make someone smile today!
