The Simple Power of Prayer

There is something amazing about prayer, about us communicating/ talking with God. All over the Bible we are challenged, encouraged, and commanded to pray.

1 Chronicles 16:11 Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His presence continually!
Psalm 145:18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
Colossians 4:2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing,
Philippians 4:6-7 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Now sure we do not always get the answers we want when we pray; some people will not get healed, or some circumstances will not change, or some things we ask for will not happen. This is where we need to trust in God regardless of the outcome, yet believing God can do anything. See, He is God and we are not. He knows what is best and has purposes far beyond ours.

Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Yet, God has put in our hands a simple but powerful tool to use! Why would we not?!? There is so much going on in our world today, we need to pray; the shootings in Canada, Seattle, Sacramento, San Clemente…Ebola, Isis, wars, the economy, famine, drought, our families, even ourselves! And what about this next election in just a few days; new people in congress and others that will be put in a place of political and social influence…even here in our city of Cypress we have 3 seats open on our city council that will change the climate of this community…we need to pray!

James 5:16b-18 16b The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.1 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

Let’s engage this simple power of prayer. It’s one of our callings as followers of Jesus. You will be surprised at how we can thrive and help other thrive as we pray. Why not spend a moment and pray right now.
