Last week I noticed a few friends talking and as I walked up they smiled said that my ears must have been burning!?! Looking questioned, they both put their hands on my shoulders and said they were just talking about me. I must have looked a little worried because both said, with big smiles, that they were appreciating something I had done. They then took a few minutes and shared what they appreciated and looking me in the eyes, complemented me. A bit stunned, I thanked them and the Lord for their kind words and you could tell these wonderful men were filled with joy to share something encouraging.
As well, I walked away feeling encouraged, blessed, and pumped up to not only do more of what they appreciated, but be more the person God created me to be. Words of praise and encouragement have that power in our lives in both the giving and receiving of praise and admiration. That’s one of the reasons we are encouraged to build up others with our words
Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Unwholesome talk are words that tear down; insults, name-calling, words intent on hurting, words that are meant to inflict pain. You know those words, and you may still feel the piercing wounds of those harsh word-arrows, even from long ago…I know I can.
Yet those words of praise, those words that build up, can have an even greater impact on our lives. They help us see ourselves as God does. For God sees us a masterpiece of His creation Psalm 139, the object of His great love John 3:16 – Jeremiah 31:3 – Romans 5:8, and a beloved child of His forever family Ephesians 1:4-6. If we have made that decision to believe in Jesus (by the way if you are not sure if you believe, please contact me and I would be happy to connect with you and help you ether make that decision of faith or help reassure you).
Now a hidden value of praise is when we pass that praise along, for there is a joy, a fun in building up others. How great it is for us to brighten someone’s day with a word of praise.
Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
We can have a great influence and be used of God to help someone be better at love and the good person God created them to be as we praise and encourage them. How awesome is that!?! When we give out praise and blessings, some of it gets on us as well; our day is brightened.
It goes the same with praising God.
Psalm 34:1-3 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together!
To ‘bless’ is to speak good about God…and we can bless others by speaking well of them.
To ‘praise’ is to speak of the personal value God has to us…and we can express the values others have towards us as well.
To ‘magnify’ is to tell of how great God is…and we can tell of how great others are too.
When we praise God, the hidden value is we increase in our minds and hearts how amazing and wonderful and beautiful and powerful and majestic and incredible and AWESOME God is.
There is a hidden value in praise, in the praising of others and in the praising of God. Why not try it this week and see what a difference it makes to others, but also what a difference it makes in you.
Seeking to praise more with you,
