You Are More

Did you ever have a nickname growing up? Not just a short version of your name, but more of a label given to you? Some of those pet-names were encouraging and endearing like princess, champ, tiger, babe, and so on. Yet some of these names were not so nice and even down right mean like stinky, Mc-ugly, fat-boy, and many other really derogatory ones. The sad reality about these names is that they can become labels and affect our self-esteem.

As well, the bad choices we make can also have a defining factor to them. Even the mistakes we make have a way of shaping us. BUT the truth is we are more than the labels, choices, and mistakes. If we have come to the place in our lives where we have stepped into a relationship with The Lord, we don’t have to let all this define us.

The musical group Tenth Avenue North wrote a song ‘You Are More.’ The chorus of the song go like this:

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.

See, when someone believes in Jesus as their Savior (if you are not sure if you have ever done this write me back and we can chat) they are made new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

We are reborn as John 3 talks. We have a new identity in Christ Jesus as part of His forever-family. We are not defined by the labels people put on us, or the bad choices we make, or even the mistakes we make…we are more than those. They are not what defines us. What should define us is our Creator who made us.

Psalms 139:13-14 For You (God) created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful,I know that full well.

Yes God created you and God does not make mistakes. You are beautiful/handsome and wonderful creation of God. But there’s more, God loves us immensely.

Psalms 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with his love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Psalms 136:26 Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.

1 John 4:10 This is love:not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Yes, we are loved! This is what we are to let define us, not the labels, bad choices, mistakes, problems we face, we are more than those.

Sure we face the consequences of our choices and are victims of the bad choices other’s make, but we are more, and God will use those circumstances to refine us.

James 1:2-5 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

God is that great coach who does not give up on us, for He sees our true potential and will use the circumstances of life to continue to refine us.

Proverbs 17:3 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.

So how is He refining you? How is He bringing out the ‘more’ in you? For you are more than the labels, more than the bad choices, more than the mistakes, more than the problems, more than the troubles. You are more!

Seeking to be God’s More with you,

Mike
