Being At the Right Place At the Right Time

On the news the other day there was a hero story of a man who helped rescue a boy who was completely buried in the sand at the beach. His sister saw him get sucked down in the sand from a deep hole they were digging. She could not get him out so the man rushed over to dig him out. Others joined in and they found him some six feet under. A doctor just happened to be there and revived the boy as paramedics entered onto the scene. As the man related the story to the reporter he said he was not a hero. He was just doing what anybody would have done, but he was so glad he was where he was and that a doctor was close by. This good Samaritan was at the right place at the right time. As I watched this I thanked God He had this guy and a skilled doctor right at that location on the beach, at that time, on that day. God does stuff like that.

In thinking about being at the right place at the right time, I was reminded about the passage in Acts 17 on being relevant that Pastor Justin spoke from this past Sunday. This relevance is not referring to being hip or in with the styles, but being connected to God and connected with the world around us. (If you missed the sermon, listen to it online or get the CD). Let’s look again at Acts 17:26-27:

Acts 17:26-27 26 From one man He (God) made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.27 God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

Just like God orchestrated those guys to be in the right place at the right time to save that boy, He does that with us so when people reach out we are there. God has even uniquely gifted you and given you talents and abilities so when those times arise your skills are just what is needed. This is our unique calling.

Now we are going to talk a lot more about this in the coming months, particularly from October 3 to November 14, as we focus in on “Living God’s Unique Call.” This campaign will have five basic elements to it that are key and vital for us to gain all that God has for us. So I want to encourage you to participate in all five of these basic element over these seven weeks with Sunday services, Small Groups, daily devotionals, an Opening Encounter event (evening of October 3), Celebration Encounter (evening of November 14), and teaming with all the church to be part of our Christmas ministry. More information and details are on their way, but be praying and planning to be fully part of this significant time for you and our church.

God has and will continue to arrange us to be in the right place at the right time. I know for me when I start thinking about that I wonder if the person I’m next to in line is there because God wants me to say something that will encourage them, or maybe He knows I’m going to trip while running (yes it has happened to me many times!) and He has someone drive by just in time so they get a good laugh, or maybe He is having me write this so you will read it at work and look around and notice someone He wants you to talk to. God does stuff like that. It is awesome that the God of the universe who is all powerful and does not need us in any way loves to let us be part of what He is doing. So when people reach out for Him we are there to show them the way.

Be used of God today and look for opportunities to be at the right place at the right time – that’s your unique call.

Grace and peace,
